Half Moon Bay Adds Red Curbs to Meet Code Requirements and Increase Safety – Coast Side News

Half Moon Bay is adjusting its transportation policies with actions taken at a City Council meeting Tuesday night. The Council approved new parking restrictions and a long-term plan to reduce car dependency.

To comply with the California Fire and Vehicle Codes, the city designated several hundred feet of curb as red zones, creating new no-parking areas. The affected locations include the Court of San Marco, Kelly Avenue near Jenna Lane, Valdez Avenue near Alsace Lorraine, Poplar Street near Main Street, Main Street near Seymour Street, Main Street near Higgins Canyon Road, and portions of Wavecrest Road.

The city plans on adding red paint to curbsides to meet code requirements and increase safety. California’s Daylighting Law, which took effect at the beginning of the year, extends no-parking zones to 20 feet near crosswalks - whether or not they are marked - and to 15 feet if the crosswalk has a curb extension. The law applies even if the curb is not painted red and is intended to improve visibility and pedestrian safety.

The City Council also approved the Transportation Demand Management Plan, “Get There Together.” The plan, funded by the city and San Mateo County, outlines strategies to reduce reliance on personal vehicles in Half Moon Bay and along the Midcoast. It aims to improve mobility options, address traffic concerns and enhance coastal connectivity.
